The scene was a Mat-Painting shot used when Indy mis-spelled the ancient spelling of Jahovah. Mike used a bar and wrist straps to hang on before pulling himself back up. It was shot a number of times with different "hang time" between the fall and the pull-up. One shot was taken over because the hat fell into the bottom-less pit below.
